The story of Olaudah Equiano reads like a surreal and perverse tale of obstacles worthy of the Greek myths. Equiano was enslaved as an 11 year old child captured in southern Nigeria. He was bought and sold numerous times, crossed the Atlantic as a slave but was finally able to buy his freedom and write his extraordinary autobiography 'The Interesting Narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African'. He was a leader of the Anti Slave Trade Movement and was the first to tell abolitionist Granville Sharp of the infamous Zong Massacre. He is thought to have lived in Deptford while still enslaved.
As I prepare my fleet of vessels for the Boundless: Transitions exhibition (APT Gallery, Deptford) in October I will be honouring his memory and legacy with a ship called 'The Equiano'.

This is a first sketch for 'Fleet' an interactive installation by Fion Gunn which will feature in the Boundless: Transitions Exhibition @ APT Gallery in October. The fleet of imagined ships, space vessels & aircraft will emerge from suspended clouds and feature all kinds of interactivity - lights sound and movement triggered by visitors as they move around it. Some of the vessels will carry spices so the smells of cloves, cinnamon and coriander will add to its immersive feel. Images of the work in progress will be posted over the coming months.
