Shoran Jiang
Shoran Jiang is an artist, writer and art educator based in London.
After obtaining her second MFA degree from Chelsea College of Arts in 2009, Shoran Jiang devoted herself into full-time art productions. Her practices primarily reflect upon personal images, narratives and fates under historical contexts, as well as examine the intertwining relationship between individuals and daily objects in the very present moments.
Since 2009 Shoran has participated in a range of exhibitions, including an interactive, participatory exhibition - Odyssey: Explorations in Tate Exchange Liverpool, an online experimental exhibition Beyond Borders in 2020 and Going Postal at ICA, London, 20/21 London International Art Fair at the Royal College of Art, Bloomsbury Art Fair at London House, Fat Art 2010 in Beijing and Cheers:) in 2009 Exhibition at OXO Tower. Shoran’s 2018 solo show Food Object was held in 798 Arts District, Beijing.
As a writer, Shoran’s publication Splendour of Dunhuang Art was endorsed by Dunhuang Art Museum as one of the official Children's Books of Dunhuang. It uses simple language and vivid illustrations to talk children through Dunhuang’s culture, history, art, legacy and its influence in today’s world. KFC China approached the series for collaboration; they are now an exclusive gift for KFC China’s Happy Meal customers.
Shoran's recent publication is a series of ten children's art books named This is ART. They juxtapose Western and East Asian artworks in both art and historical contexts, designed to foster cross-cultural horizons and inspire multi-disciplinary creativity for young audiences.
Significant UK-based experiences include Odyssey: Exploration at the Tate Exchange, Liverpool with Fion Gunn. Odyssey:Explorations was an arts project which explored how our personal journeys can be transformative, set against a backdrop of the global movement of peoples, cultures, materials and ideas. Participants made vessels of all sorts, learned how to 3D scan them and view them as augmented reality pop-ups. In these workshops, participants had wonderfully imaginative and creative responses and everyone enjoyed taking AR selfies with their 3D boat models. www.odysseyexplorations.com/
In 2020, because of the pandemic, Shoran found a new interactive way of children online art workshops, these workshops have attracted young people from the UK, Canada, USA and China.
Over the years, Shoran has built up professional experience at different venues and institutions, working with children and their families across different countries. In 2018, Shoran led a series of public workshops RethINKING Tradition in various venues, including the Southbank Centre. In collaboration with choreographer Si Rawlinson, Shoran co-created a public performance piece that integrates contemporary dance moves with calligraphy. The project celebrates the heritage and the legacy of traditional calligraphy, incorporating multi-disciplinary programmes and events designed specifically for families and young audiences.
